To facilitate appropriate referrals to radiology departments, The Royal College of Radiologists has published the iRefer guidelines (iRefer) since 1989. iRefer is now widely accepted as a major tool to promote evidence-based imaging.
Accessing iRefer
Fellows and members of The Royal College of Radiologists can access the guidelines for free.
If you work within NHS Scotland, you can access iRefer for free. Users accessing the guidelines from within the NHS Scotland network should see a green 'Log in automatically' button on the iRefer homepage. If you are not able to see the green log in button or if you are having problems accessing the guidelines, contact nss.showteam@nhs.scot.
If you work within NHS Wales, you can access iRefer – NHS Wales for free. If you are accessing the site from an authorised NHS Wales site, going to this web address will take you into the guidelines. If the location that you are accessing the site from is not authorised, you will be presented with an access request form. Complete the form with your details and support staff will verify the form and action your request. Any queries should be sent to elibrary@wales.nhs.uk.
If you work within the Health and Social Care Board in Northern Ireland you can access iRefer for free. If you are accessing the site from an authorised Health and Social Care Board site, going to www.irefer.org.uk will take you into the guidelines.
If you work within the Health Service Executive in the Republic of Ireland you can access iRefer for free. If you are accessing the site from an authorised Health Service Executive site, you should see a green 'Log in automatically' button on the iRefer homepage.
While the lead bodies in some UK countries have entered into license agreements for access to the eighth edition of iRefer, others have not.
For information, the pricing structure for online subscriptions to the eighth edition are available at www.irefer.org.uk/pricing.
While we recommend purchasing iRefer online subscriptions via the iRefer website we understand that in some circumstances that may not be possible. In those instances, we are able to invoice for your order. If you would like to be invoiced, please complete this online form.

NICE has accredited the process used by The Royal College of Radiologists to produce its iRefer: making the best use of clinical radiology guidance.
