Elections FAQs
Fellows in good standing resident in the UK, holding a current licence to practise with the GMC and in active clinical practice are eligible to stand.
Yes. You do not need to hold a consultant appointment or have been awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) to stand for an elected role. As long as you are a UK Fellow of the RCR in good standing and fulfil the criteria listed above, you are eligible.
Yes. Each applicant must be nominated by two Fellows in the same Faculty (ie a clinical radiologist cannot be nominated by clinical oncologists and vice versa) who are in good standing, with a current licence to practise and in active clinical practice in the UK.
Council and the Boards meet three times per College year (which starts on 1 September). Face-to-face meetings are advantageous for the opportunity to network with other members, but remote participation is available via videolink and teleconference. Please note that for Council and the Faculty Boards, an elected member ceases to hold office if he or she fails to attend two consecutive meetings without leave of absence being granted by the Chair. Please refer to the role description for elected members of the particular board or committee you are interested in for further details regarding time commitment.
Council and board meetings are usually held on Thursdays or Fridays. Although every effort is made to avoid scheduling meetings during school holidays, due to the number of meetings that have to be fitted in to the College year, it is sometimes impossible. The College avoids scheduling Board and committee meetings during August and the Christmas period.
Meetings are held at the College’s premises in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. Committee members who cannot get to London for the meeting may join in via video/audio link.
The College calendar is available online.
For Officer posts, there is an induction period of six months prior to taking up office, during which time the Officer-elect will shadow the current post holder and meet key individuals at the College with whom they will be working. An induction day is offered at the start of September. For Council or Board members an introduction to the work is given by the Chair and staff.
As meetings are held during the working week, candidates should ensure that the agreement of their employer has been obtained in accordance with their terms of employment. For Honorary Officer posts, the six-month induction period should also be taken into account when considering the term of office.
Fellows in good standing based in the UK are able to vote.
All those elected will take up office on 1 September in the year of the election.
Terms of office on Boards and Committee are for three years. If a vacancy fails to be filled during the nomination and election period, it may be filled as a casual vacancy for that College year.
No. You may seek election to a role again as long as there is a “fallow” period of 12 months or more between terms.
Ballots will be sent by email to every UK Fellow in good standing for whom the College has an email address. Information about how to register to vote online will be posted to those for whom we do not have an email address.
