Anthony Carey and Sir David Sloman appointed to the RCR’s new Trustee Board

We’re pleased to announce that Anthony Carey and Sir David Sloman have been appointed as lay trustees of The Royal College of Radiologists’ (RCR) new Trustee Board. Both will officially start from 1 September 2023 and will bring a breadth of experience and expertise from across a number of sectors to the strategic leadership of the RCR.

These appointments follow the proposed changes to modernise the governance of the RCR which included establishing a new Trustee Board, with Mr Carey appointed as the first Lay Treasurer, and Sir David as a Lay Trustee.

Mr Carey is a chartered accountant and chartered director and was for many years a partner at the accountancy firm Mazars, where he is currently Senior Adviser, Board Practice and Public Policy. Mr Carey is also an experienced non-executive director and has taken a particular interest in the higher education and health sectors. He is currently a Council member at Lancaster University and on the board of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, where he serves on each of their finance committees.

He is a Lay Trustee at The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Chair of Uniac, which provides internal audit services within higher education.

Mr Carey said: “It will be a privilege to serve the RCR and help shape its leadership role in clinical radiology and clinical oncology.

“I believe all Royal Colleges must focus on ensuring their long-term sustainability in a post-pandemic world in order to serve today's Fellows and members and those of future generations in the UK and around the world.”

Sir David will be retiring as Chief Operating Officer of NHS England on 3 September 2023, having been in the role for almost two years. Before this, he had 24 years of experience as Chief Executive Officer of several NHS trusts in London.

Sir David was awarded a knighthood in 2017 for his services to the NHS and is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine.

Sir David said: “I’m delighted to be joining the RCR’s new Trustee Board and bringing my experience in leadership, strategy, collaboration and inclusion.

“The RCR is an exciting organisation and I’m looking forward to representing the needs and interests of our Fellows and members on the issues that matter most.”
