Guidance to support benchmarking and validation of AI for the identification of lung diseases
In October 2021, The Health and Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) produced a report on the ‘Missed detection of lung cancer on chest X-rays of patients being seen in primary care’. In the report, one of the recommendations was that the NHS ‘develops guidance to support independent benchmarking and validation of artificial intelligence algorithms for the identification of lung diseases such as cancer’.
The RCR has taken up the development of this guidance and plan to publish by March 2024. We believe this guidance will mark a significant step forward for the treatment of lung diseases and hope it will also have significantly wider applicability.
Given the international nature of AI development, and the importance of this guidance, we have also brought together a global advisory group to help coordinate our work on AI.
