Speed mentoring: Join us for live peer-to-peer mentoring at the RCR Annual Conference 2023

Ten years ago, I was asked to support The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) in developing a pilot mentoring scheme. This proved to be very successful, so I’m delighted to share the experience of working in a skilled conversation in two sessions at this year’s RCR Annual Conference.

In advance of the workshop, here’s some questions I’d pose to you:

• Are you interested in learning a bit more about mentoring?
• Is mentoring something you are already doing, but you are not sure you are doing it well?
• Have you ever wondered how mentoring could support or accelerate your career?
• Would you like to find out how to get involved in one of the RCR mentoring schemes?

Power of mentoring

Whether you are in your early, mid or late career stage, our interactive workshop will allow you to engage with the power of mentoring and learn more about the RCR’s mentoring schemes. Mentoring is a developmental partnership through which one person shares knowledge, skills, information, and perspective to foster the personal and professional growth of someone else. We all have a need for insight that is outside of our normal life and professional experience or contacts. The power of mentoring is that it creates a one-of-a-kind opportunity for support, goal achievement and problem-solving.

Mentoring is widely used in business as a way of encouraging growth and support at all levels. It is used in a variety of contexts from supporting junior members of staff to climb the career ladder, to supporting chief executives in developing strategic partnerships across sectors.

For mentoring to be truly effective it is important to recognise the skills it takes to help another person develop. To put it bluntly, this is not about doing things for the mentee, or introducing them to influential people, it is about guiding another person to discover their potential and support them to realise it. One of the key insights mentors learn is when to share their knowledge, and when to let their partner discover things for themselves.
